Like pic­tur­ing an im­age while lis­ten­ing to mu­sic, a tune can be heard when fac­ing an art­work. «Singing Pic­tures» in­tro­duces artists Teppei Ka­neuji, Chi­hiro Mori, with Yoon­kee Kim, and Nonchelee who are artists as well as mu­si­cians. These four artists re­flect in­di­vid­ual taste and in­ter­est area, as their works di­rectly rep­re­sent ex­pe­ri­en­tial recog­ni­tion.
Based in Ky­oto, Teppei Ka­neuji works with found im­ages from manga or mag­a­zines, three-di­men­tion­al­iz­ing their orig­i­nal flat­ness. Artist’s ‹Ghost in the Liq­uid Room› se­ries re­arranges and mod­ify pho­tos of liq­uid from cos­metic and food ad­ver­tise­ments. Es­pe­cially his mo­bile like sculp­tures holds vari­abil­ity in its form spin­ning and shak­ing like mov­ing fluid.
Yoon­kee Kim’s draw­ings and paint­ings are like frag­ments of his mu­sic in marker, col­ored pen­cil, wa­ter­color and acrylic paint. Ti­tles of his works are quite pre­pos­ter­ous, how­ever, re­flects the artist’s in­ge­nious think­ing. ‹Oc­to­pus hu­man› com­bines mu­sic and paint­ing, it’s repet­i­tive melody al­low­ing imag­i­na­tion of hu­mor­ous move­ment of the crea­tures in the pic­ture.
Cur­rently liv­ing and work­ing in Fukuoka, Nonchelee hu­mor­ously records daily mo­ments in his dis­tinc­tive style. Peo­ple en­joy­ing mu­sic ap­pear in most of his works, scenes of singing or danc­ing to­gether cheer­fully por­trayed. Artist re­veals his thoughts and feel­ings with hon­esty, in­duc­ing a mo­men­tary ex­pe­ri­ence of the at­mos­phere de­picted in his work.
Chi­hiro Mori’s paint­ings are un­usual in com­po­si­tion and feel un­re­al­is­tic, as a re­sult of the artist’s mem­o­ries of sto­ries and land­scapes from dif­fer­ent time co­ex­ist­ing on one can­vas. Mori some­times recre­ates doo­dles from ado­les­cence, in con­trast to their im­per­fect lines col­or­ing on pa­per is elab­o­rate and cal­cu­lated in de­tail.

음악을 듣고 상상되는 그림이 있듯이 작품을 마주했을 때 어떠한 선율이 떠오르는 경우도 있다. «Singing Pic­tures»전은 미술작가 가네우지 텟페이, 모리 치히로와 미술과 음악을 병행하는 김윤기, 논체리를 함께 소개한다. 네 작가의 작품들은 공통적으로 개인의 취향과 관심 영역을 뚜렷하게 반영하는데 이는 작품들이 작가의 경험적 인식을 직접 표상화하기 때문이다.
교토를 기반으로 활동하는 가네우지 텟페이는 망가 또는 잡지에서 찾아낸 이미지들 소재 삼아 작업하는데 기존의 소재가 가진 납작함을 입체화하여 표현한다. 작가의 ‹Ghost in the Liq­uid Room› 연작은 화장품과 음식 광고에서 오려낸 액체 이미지들을 재배열하고 그 형태나 구조를 변형하여 조각으로 완성한 작업이다. 그중 모빌의 형태를 띈 조각들은 고정되지 않은 상태의 액체와 같이 돌거나 흔들리는 가변성을 가지고 있다.
김윤기는 그가 만든 곡들의 한 파편과 같은 드로잉과 페인팅을 사인펜, 마커, 색연필, 수채화 물감, 아크릴 물감 등의 재료들로 그려나간다. 작품의 제목은 작가가 쓴 가사들처럼 다소 엉뚱하지만, 작가만의 기발한 생각들이 고스란히 담겨있다. ‹문어인간›은 회화작업과 음악 작업을 결합하여 완성한 작품으로 반복적인 멜로디가 그림 속 생명체의 익살스러운 움직임을 상상하게 한다.
현재 후쿠오카에서 거주하며 활동하는 논체리는 일상에서 포착한 순간들을 특유의 스타일로 유머러스하게 기록한다. 다수의 작품에는 음악을 즐기는 다양한 사람들의 모습이 등장하는데 함께 춤을 추거나 노래를 부르는 모습이 흥겹게 묘사된다. 작가는 자기 생각과 감정들을 매우 솔직하게 작품에 드러내며 이를 통해 그림 속 순간의 분위기를 경험 도록 유도한다.
모리 치히로의 그림은 구성이 매우 독특하며 다소 비현실적으로 느껴진다. 이는 작가가 기억하는 다른 시점의 이야기와 풍경이 한 캔버스에 자리하기 때문이다. 작가는 어린 시절 즐기던 낙서들을 재현하기도 하는데 불완전한 형태의 선들과 대조적으로 종이 위 정교한 채색은 치밀하고 계획적이다.
