2020, Seoul, 4 AM
Faint dawn before sunrise, strange silver air fills the empty city, indistinguishable, whether it is fog or particulate matter. The body sinks gradually, sensing and absorbing the sticky particles in the air that seeps through the narrow window gap. The flashing red stoplight triggers a question, looping continuously.
Min ha Park’s silvery abstract paintings and red-light sculptures allow us to dimensionalize memories of particular moments and sentiments. The artist records on canvas these specific conditions parallel to the spiritual landscape and symbolic landscape divided into units of light, color, and form. She repeats painting and erasing, habitually asks new questions, to locate answers. Countless windows on the screen open and disappear, as the texts and images that were once glowing on the monitor overlap into a lump of sooty residue.
In the exhibition Peculiar Weather, Park uses various silver pigments to realize the dawn of an airy city overcast with microdust. Shiny particles layered and sprayed on the canvas absorb or reflect light, revealing their form then disappearing dimly according to different angles. A stereoscopic piece A Condition is an extension from For Achilles, 2017, a small sculpture combined with a tiny LED terminal. It emits red light, creating variable scenes depending on the light condition of the space. Small particles in the gallery scatter or sink to form a veil, and light and air continue to circulate.
Weather is an indicator of the environment in which the artist belongs. We no longer believe in the blue sky or the clean fog, continuously refreshing the air pollution application while being vulnerably exposed to the strange environment. It's been a long time since it is this clear and sunny, but feeling rather stuffy isn’t just from the mask.

동트기 전 희미한 새벽, 안개인지 미세먼지인지 구분할 수 없는 기묘한 은빛 공기가 빈 도시를 가득 메운다.

신체는 창틈으로 스며든 공기 중의 끈적이는 입자들을 감각하고 흡수하며 점점 가라앉는다.

깜빡이는 빨간 정지등 사이로 머릿속에 떠오른 질문 하나가 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 이어진다.
박민하의 은빛 추상회화와 붉게 빛나는 조각은 우리가 경험했던 어떤 장면과 감정을 입체적으로 기억하게 한다.

작가는 풍경의 특정 상태와 평행을 이루기를 시도하며, 무속적 풍경과 빛, 색, 형태로 분할된 기호적 풍경을 캔버스에 기록한다. 모니터에서 빛나던 글과 이미지들은 중첩되어 덩어리진 불투명한 잔상으로 남는다.
‹은빛 공기; Peculiar Weather›에서 작가는 미세먼지로 뒤덮인 비현실적인 도시의 새벽을 다른 물질성을 가진 은빛 안료들로 구현한다. 캔버스에 겹겹이 칠해지고 뿌려진 반짝이는 입자들은 빛을 흡수하거나 반사해 각도에 따라 그 형태가 선명히 드러났다 흐릿하게 사라져버린다. ‹A Condition›은 LED 단자를 결합해 만든 작은 조각 ‹For Achilles, 2017›에서 확장된 입체작업으로 발산하는 붉은색 빛이 공간의 조도에 따라 가변적인 장면들을 연출한다. 전시장 안의 작은 입자들은 흩날리거나 가라앉아 막을 형성하고 빛과 공기는 계속 순환한다.
날씨는 작가가 속한 환경의 지표가 된다. 더는 파란 하늘도 깨끗한 안개도 믿지 못하는 우리는 기이한 환경에 무방비 상태로 노출된 채 매일 대기오염 애플리케이션을 켜고 연속적으로 새로 고침 버튼을 눌러본다. 오랜만의 쾌청하고 맑은 날씨인데 어딘가 계속 답답하게 느껴지는 건 단지 마스크 때문만은 아닌 것 같다.
